10. WHAT GOT YOU STARTED IN TATTOOING?
Breaking my hand. It kinda blows my mind to think how different my life would be if I didn’t get into that fight or if I wasn’t good friends and/or living with a tattooer at the time …scares me also. This said, I didn’t tattoo for very long - and as the story goes… I ran a busy street shop (in Brisbane) for a year or 2 (most of which, struggling with a cast on FYI) before ultimately being offered an apprenticeship. It was during this time I collected alot of stupid tattoos (ones that I’d later regret and laser remove later in my life *facepalm) but most importantly, at least for me, where I fell in love with the tattoo culture and tattoos on a much deeper level. It’s also where I started to learn to draw and paint with watercolours - and where I learnt good, hard, old-fashioned discipline. This was way before Instagram and, I guess what you’d call the ‘new wave’ ? …and somewhat different. It was great and exactly what I needed …but decided it was best for me to leave the life I had in hopes of leaving behind many of a not-so-good circle and bad habits. Intended on going back into the art of tattooing ...however as fate would have it, I never went back. Instead went back to Carpentry for a while (my trade) until one day deciding that I wasn’t happy, then I quit. The next day, I put all of my sole focus back into my work …and that was at least 10 years ago now …and never looked back!
